Marble Fair, Warsaw-Poland

Why Poland:

Poland, country of central Europe. Poland is located at a geographic crossroads that links the forested lands of northwestern Europe to the sea lanes of the Atlantic Ocean and the fertile plains of the Eurasian frontier. Now bounded by seven nations, Poland has waxed and waned over the centuries, buffeted by the forces of regional history. In the early Middle Ages, Poland’s small principalities and townships were subjugated by successive waves of invaders, from Germans and Balts to Mongols. In the mid-1500s, united Poland was the largest state in Europe and perhaps the continent’s most powerful nation. Yet two and a half centuries later, during the Partitions of Poland (1772–1918), it disappeared, parceled out among the contending empires of Russia, Prussia, and Austria. Poland’s economic freedom score is 68.7, making its economy the 39th freest in the 2022 Index. Poland is ranked 25th among 45 countries in the Europe region, and its overall score is below the regional average but above the world average.

The Polish economy gained strength in 2017 and 2018, slowed in 2019, and contracted in 2020. Growth resumed in 2021. Economic freedom has trended upward over those five years. With score increases in property rights and business freedom, Poland has recorded a slight 0.4-point overall gain of economic freedom since 2017 and remains in the upper reaches of the “Moderately Free” category. Fiscal health, monetary freedom, trade freedom, and investment freedom are strengths, but government spending’s weight on the economy remains a problem.

Within the stone industry there are literally hundreds, perhaps as much as 2000 (out of total of around 7000 stonemasons), single wire and also many multi-wire machines that have been installed in recent years. These wire machines allow for personalized production and provide greater flexibility to the stonemasons, that is why the trend of processing blocks has increased instead of buying more slabs as would have normally be expected with rising cost of labour.
