Surface Design Show, London-United Kingdom 4-6 February 2025

Why United Kingdom:

London, city, capital of the United Kingdom. It is among the oldest of the world’s great cities—its history spanning nearly two millennia—and one of the most cosmopolitan. By far Britain’s largest metropolis, it is also the country’s economic, transportation, and cultural center. London is situated in southeastern England, lying astride the River Thames some 50 miles (80 km) upstream from its estuary on the North Sea. In satellite photographs the metropolis can be seen to sit compactly in a Green Belt of open land, with its principal ring highway (the M25 motorway) threaded around it at a radius of about 20 miles (30 km) from the city center. The growth of the built-up area was halted by strict town planning controls in the mid-1950s.

The United Kingdom’s economic freedom score is 72.7, making its economy the 24th freest in the 2022 Index. The United Kingdom is ranked 17th among 45 countries in the Europe region, and its overall score is above the regional and world averages. As was the case in many other highly developed countries over the past five years, the United Kingdom’s economic growth turned negative in 2020 before resuming in 2021. However, a five-year trend of robust economic freedom has stumbled a bit. With lower marks for fiscal health, business freedom, and labor freedom, the U.K. has recorded a 3.7-point overall loss of economic freedom since 2017 and has fallen from the upper half to the lower half of the “Mostly Free” category. Monetary freedom and trade freedom are strong, but excessive government spending has been a drag on fiscal health..

London Stone is a market leader in the supply of natural stone paving to clients throughout the UK. Renowned for our comprehensive range of sawn paving and bespoke stone, we provide high quality products, excellent value for money and superior customer service to a broad range of client types that include landscape contractors, garden designers, property developers, architects and homeowners.

8th Machines, Tools and Natural Stone Fair, Batalha-Portugal 22-24 June 2025

Why Portugal:

Portugal, country lying along the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. Once continental Europe’s greatest power, Portugal shares commonalities—geographic and cultural—with the countries of both northern Europe and the Mediterranean. Its cold, rocky northern coast and mountainous interior are sparsely settled, scenic, and wild, while the country’s south, the Algarve, is warm and fertile. The rugged Estrela Mountains (Serra da Estrela, or “Star Mountain Range”), which lie between the Tagus and Mondego rivers, contain the highest point of mainland Portugal.

Portugal’s economic freedom score is 70.8, making its economy the 31st freest in the 2022 Index. Portugal is ranked 21st among 45 countries in the Europe region, and its overall score is above the regional and world averages. The Portuguese economy contracted in 2020, but growth resumed in 2021. In the past half-decade, a robust expansion of economic freedom has continued. Aided by substantial score increases for fiscal health and rule of law, Portugal has recorded an impressive 8.2-point overall gain of economic freedom since 2017 and has climbed into the “Mostly Free” category for the first time in the 28-year history of the Index. Monetary freedom and trade freedom are healthy, but the economy continues to be burdened by heavy government spending.

Portugal is an old and important natural stone producer and exporter – 380 M USD in 2015 (roughly
over 70% of it as finished products) being, on a per capita basis, the largest world exporter. The
country’s stone exports have a high added value, its average price being one of (if not) the largest in
the world.
The Portuguese natural stone production is diversified, ranging from marble and limestone quarried
in the South and Centre of the country to granites in the Centre and North of Portugal. The country
also has an important stone manufacturing base, with factories located near Lisbon (Pero Pinheiro) and
in the main quarrying centers. The country is also a manufacturer of specialized equipment and
machinery for the stone industry.
The natural stone industry is fragmented, being composed mostly of family owned businesses.
All these factors contributed along millennia to a stone culture in the country – Portugal has the largest concentration of pre-historic stone monuments in Europe and natural stone is used in virtually every single house in
Portugal.
The country is well placed to be a trade platform between Europe, Africa and the Americas  with good transport infrastructure and competitive specialized manpower.

About Fair:

We promoted yet another edition of STONE – 5th Fair of Natural Stone, Flooring, Coatings for Civil Construction, Machinery, Tools and Accessories. A reference event in the natural stone sector. In 2019, we gathered in a space of 16,000 m2, more than a hundred exhibitors, who faithfully represented the natural stone sector in Portugal. Natural stone exports are worth around 390 million euros, for a total of 1.9 million tons, with a world market share of around 2.6%. In this context, the fair is an open door to the international market. Participation in STONE is an excellent opportunity for companies in this sector to contact the national and international market, present their proposals and solutions, strengthen commercial relationships and do business.

Cachoeiro Stone Fair, Brazil 27-30 August 2024

Why Brazil:

Brazil is the fifth most-populous country on Earth and accounts for one-third of Latin America’s population. Most of the inhabitants of Brazil are concentrated along the eastern seaboard, although its capital, Brasília, is located far inland and increasing numbers of migrants are moving to the interior. Rio de Janeiro, in the eyes of many of the world, continues to be the preeminent icon of Brazil. The nation’s burgeoning cities, huge hydroelectric and industrial complexes, mines, and fertile farmlands make it one of the world’s major economies. However, Brazil struggles with extreme social inequalities, environmental degradationintermittent financial crises, and a sometimes deadlocked political system.

Brazil’s economic freedom score is 53.3, making its economy the 133rd freest in the 2022 Index. Brazil is ranked 26th among 32 countries in the Americas region, and its overall score is below the regional and world averages. Brazil’s economic growth slowed in 2019, turned negative in 2020, and rebounded in 2021. Its level of economic freedom has changed little over the past five years. Led by modest score increases in labor freedom and government integrity, Brazil has recorded a mere 0.4-point overall gain in economic freedom since 2017 and remains in the lower ranks of the “Mostly Unfree” countries. Monetary freedom is relatively good, but its fiscal health is among the world’s worst.

At a time when the natural stone industry is facing unprecedented challenges, there is severe competition from new alternative materials, new competitors from other countries, the pandemic, economic turmoil in many markets, it comes as somewhat of a surprise that there is one country, a major player in the world of natural stone, that is showing turbocharged growth. New quarries, profitable growth in sales, especially exports, major investments by companies, a growing local ecosystem of suppliers of all kinds of inputs, upgrading of local skills, relatively young people running the companies, a generally optimistic outlook towards the industry’s future in the country- all the parameters that define an industry with a promising future, are fulfilled in this case. That is what the situation of the Brazilian stone industry currently is during the middle of 2021- call it the Golden Age, and this definition does not look an exaggeration.

About Fair:

There are more than 30 years of history and support for the development of the ornamental stone sector. Focused on novelties, innovation and content, Cachoeiro Stone Fair confirms, year after year, its tradition and importance for the Brazilian stone sector, attracting qualified buyers, such as marble workers, distributors and importers, as well as professionals related to civil construction.

Marble Fair, Warsaw-Poland

Why Poland:

Poland, country of central Europe. Poland is located at a geographic crossroads that links the forested lands of northwestern Europe to the sea lanes of the Atlantic Ocean and the fertile plains of the Eurasian frontier. Now bounded by seven nations, Poland has waxed and waned over the centuries, buffeted by the forces of regional history. In the early Middle Ages, Poland’s small principalities and townships were subjugated by successive waves of invaders, from Germans and Balts to Mongols. In the mid-1500s, united Poland was the largest state in Europe and perhaps the continent’s most powerful nation. Yet two and a half centuries later, during the Partitions of Poland (1772–1918), it disappeared, parceled out among the contending empires of Russia, Prussia, and Austria. Poland’s economic freedom score is 68.7, making its economy the 39th freest in the 2022 Index. Poland is ranked 25th among 45 countries in the Europe region, and its overall score is below the regional average but above the world average.

The Polish economy gained strength in 2017 and 2018, slowed in 2019, and contracted in 2020. Growth resumed in 2021. Economic freedom has trended upward over those five years. With score increases in property rights and business freedom, Poland has recorded a slight 0.4-point overall gain of economic freedom since 2017 and remains in the upper reaches of the “Moderately Free” category. Fiscal health, monetary freedom, trade freedom, and investment freedom are strengths, but government spending’s weight on the economy remains a problem.

Within the stone industry there are literally hundreds, perhaps as much as 2000 (out of total of around 7000 stonemasons), single wire and also many multi-wire machines that have been installed in recent years. These wire machines allow for personalized production and provide greater flexibility to the stonemasons, that is why the trend of processing blocks has increased instead of buying more slabs as would have normally be expected with rising cost of labour.

Middle East Stone, Dubai-UAE 05-08 November 2024

Why UAE:

Dubai is the second largest emirate in the UAE, with an area of 1000 mi2. It is divided into two parts; Bur Dubai and Deira and both parts are intersected by Khor Dubai which is a tourist landmark in itself. Such a strategic location enabled Dubai to become a key world commercial hub, under the leadership of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and the sons of the late Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the man who co-founded the UAE in concert with Sheikh Zayed and established a modern Dubai that has become a key hub overlooking the Arabian Gulf.

The United Arab Emirates’ economic freedom score is 70.2, making its economy the 33rd freest in the 2022 Index. The United Arab Emirates is ranked 1st among 14 countries in the Middle East and North Africa region, and its overall score is above the regional and world averages. The economy of the United Arab Emirates has grown slowly over the past decade, and most progress was wiped out by a contraction in 2020. Economic freedom has declined over the same period. Dragged down by lower scores for judicial effectiveness and labor freedom, the United Arab Emirates has recorded a 6.7-point overall loss of economic freedom since 2017 and is now nearly at the bottom of the “Mostly Free” category. Fiscal health is robust, but judicial effectiveness is weak.

About Middle East Stone:

Xiamen Stone Fair Xiamen-China 16-19 March 2025

Why China:

China has 33 administrative units directly under the central government; these consist of 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities (Chongqing, Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), and 2 special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau). The island province of Taiwan, which has been under separate administration since 1949, is discussed in the article Taiwan. Beijing (Peking), the capital of the People’s Republic, is also the cultural, economic, and communications center of the country. Shanghai is the main industrial city.

China’s economic freedom score is 48.0, making its economy the 158th freest in the 2022 Index. China is ranked 35th among 39 countries in the Asia–Pacific region, and its overall score is below the regional and world averages. Over the past five years, China’s economic growth has slowed with the largest deceleration occurring in 2020. China’s five-year average growth rate is now only about half of its level a decade ago. Economic freedom peaked in China in 2020 after a decade-long gradual climb. Those gains are now erased, thanks largely to plummeting scores for judicial effectiveness and fiscal health, and China has dropped into the “Repressed” category. Trade freedom remains relatively strong, but the lack of investment freedom and financial freedom are serious impediments to productivity growth and development.

China is the largest of all Asian countries and has the largest population of any country in the world. Occupying nearly the entire East Asian landmass, it covers approximately one-fourteenth of the land area of Earth. Among the major countries of the world, China is surpassed in area by only Russia and Canada, and it is almost as large as the whole of Europe.

China is the biggest stone producer in the world. On top of that, China is one of the world’s biggest stone exporters. To illustrate: the total transaction value of stone imports and exports in 2012 reached an amount of more than 8 billion USD and includes an export value of more than 500 million USD.

China’s main focus concerning the stone export industry is processing raw stone materials into products with decorative functions (garden pavement, gravestones, granite counter tops, etc.). Examples of materials commonly used are granite, marble, slate, and sandstone. These stones have either local roots, or are imported from countries like Brazil, India and Turkey. Currently, China exports to more than 130 countries.
